Strong Investment Performance—Despite the Ups and Downs

The chart below, “Stock-Bond Asset Allocation Performance (1985–2023),” highlights the average annual returns for different portfolio mixes. It shows that:

100% Stocks = 12.01% Average Annual Return
80/20 (Stocks/Bonds) = 10.76% Average Annual Return
60/40 (Stocks/Bonds) = 9.46% Average Annual Return
40/60 (Stocks/Bonds) = 8.19% Average Annual Return
20/80 (Stocks/Bonds) = 6.71% Average Annual Return
100% Bonds = 5.26% Average Annual Return

As expected, portfolios with more stocks have historically delivered higher returns—but also more volatility. A 100% stock portfolio, for example, returned 12.01% on average annually, while a more balanced 60/40 mix returned 9.46%.
